Cryotron has developed a unique method using cryogenic technology for treating a variety of commonly used tool steels and parts. Extensive research has been done regarding the impact of our Vari-Cold technologiy on metal. The most significant and consistent change is the increased toughness, stability and wear resistance. Our cryogenic process is also used to extensively relieve residual and tensile stress. Metal and other materials, after Cryotron’s cryogenic treatment, show a marked increase in wear resistance without any discernable change in dimensional or volumetric integrity. Machining treated material is easier and cleaner. Redressing or regrinding treated tools removes less stock material resulting in longer tool life. Although the material is stronger following treatment, it shows little or no change in yield or tensile strength. The treated material becomes less brittle, without a change in original hardness.

Every industry will benefit from our Vari-Cold technology; to increase tool and part life, to decrease down-time due to change-out and regrinding. As one of our clients pointed out, “…processed custom made T-15 inserts are giving four times the life of Valentine carbide inserts machining A-286 with an interrupted cut...HSS inserts gave double the life of carbide”. Our South African representative also states “The results from on the tips I had processed awhile ago have shown extraordinary life extension. They have recorded 10,000 more welds with the treated tips. They normally get 2,000 welds and now achieved 12,500 welds!"

Almost any kind of tool steel or dynamic part, for whatever application, will exhibit some kind of life increase through the use of our cryogenic technology. As less tools or parts are needed, there is substantial savings in dollars. Additional savings include less downtime and short runs, less maintenance and change-over, which allows for lower production costs.
